LARK Model Works #1401 Modifications

The LARK Model Works #1401 is a very versatile kit. I have to thank a customer in California who purchased several of these kits. I asked him what he was doing with them. He replied that he was using them all over his railroad.

With a razor saw and very little effort you can easily change the profile of this building. If you examine the photo above you can see the simplest modifications. Note that item D is the unmodified casting #1401.

A. The corner parapet details have been completely removed. The result is a very utilitarian looking building, something for protection from the elements. You might find a structure like this near a scalehouse, a concrete silo, shipyard, quarry or other industrial setting.

B. The rear parapets have been removed from the roof line as well as the peak of the front wall.

C. The rear parapets alone have been removed.

In B and C the absence of the rear wall details speaks purely to thrift. These might be storefront buildings facing a street while the rear of the building is fenced from view or opening to an alley. Attractive from the "seen" side only.

D. The unmodified casting. Built as designed for its simple splendor. A proud building for a proud owner.

E. The slope of the peak was used as a guide to remove the corner details leaving the false height of the front wall. A gable roof could be applied atop the structure to change its appearance even further. The depth of the eaves or soffits could really make quite a difference in the look of the building.

In all cases the removal of material took under a minute to achieve. By laying the saw blade against the casting and using it as a guide there is little fuss to completing any of these ideas.

The result is dramatic in some instances, subtle in others. They each have a legitimate reason for being.

There are other uses for the #1401. One of which I will show here.

The #1401 casting has been married to the garage portion of LARK Model Works #1402. The raw castings are shown.

The structure that has been created will become a truck garage for the big rigs that haul materials in and out of the transfer warehouse down the street from Superior Seafood (#1402).
