LARK Model Works #1402 Tutorial- Superior Seafood

This tutorial also covers kits #1406 and #1408 Dept. of Public Works, Moe's Taxi.

The LARK Model Works #1402 is a very simple kit that requires a minimal amount of work to create a beautiful model. To begin, open the package and you will find the structure casting(s), a bag with some detail parts and the decorations sheet.

The structure should be "squared" so it sits flat. You can remove any flash (excess cast material) from the bottom of the walls by placing the casting upright on a sheet of 220 grit sandpaper. Gently scrub the casting in a circular motion until the flash is gone and the building sits flat. Use your skill to increase downward pressure as needed. You can also "go over" the casting with an emery or light sandpaper to rough up the walls for more texture. Use care so you do not damage the lintels and other cast details. A very light skin of flash might need to be removed from the door and window openings.

The casting(s) should be washed with a mild detergent to remove any mold release agents. I like to paint the entire casting flat black, inside and out. This eliminates any translucent properties the casting has and adds depth to the finish coat. Once the flat black has dried (I use a spray bomb and wait a few days) the roof is masked and the building is sprayed with my color of choice. It may take a couple of light coats to cover the black but I like the texture the light applications present when complete. You might try masking the inside walls on top of the structure and leave them black along with the roof. The corner details really "pop". Again, I wait a day to allow the paint to dry.

Grandt LineTM window and door castings are supplied. They are excellent details but are very fragile and require gentle handling. You should test fit them in each of the openings. There may be a need to relieve some of the openings to allow the castings to fit. A fine file will do or some light scraping with an hobby knife might do as well. I have found that sanding the edges of the door castings can also help fit the doors correctly. A friction fit seems to be best. Use your skill and best judgment. I use ACC to attach the castings. After inserting the window (or door) casting I apply the ACC with a toothpick from the inside of the casting. All of the Grandt LineTM details are inserted from the outside of the casting. There is (1) resin garage door casting that is attached from the inside of the main structure. It has a gluing flange that holds the inside surface of the structure. If you choose, you do not need to apply the garage door at all to have an "open" door. You might also cut the bottom of the door off to suggest a partially open door.

A simple diagram showing the door and window placement is shown above for your reference.

I apply the decorations with a Glue-StikTM. The decorations are cut from the sheet using a steel straight edge, a sharp knife- right to the edge. Color the ends of the trimmed decorations with colored pencils to hide the white edges. The decorations are flipped over and smeared with the glue which I scraped from the Glue-StikTM. Sometimes I just drag the back of the decoration through the glue with it held between my fingertips. The Glue-StikTM provides a permanent bond but allows for repositioning before it dries.

Silver beads have been included to represent roof turbines. You can use #18 escutcheon pins as caps. We have discontinued including them in the packaging over safety concerns. The turbines can be used anywhere you see fit. I prefer to add them to the large truck garage building in line with the center of the garage door going front to rear. A 1/16" drill should do it- check the drill you use against the pin you have selected.
